In recent years, smartphones have become an inseparable part of students’ daily lives. Many high school students bring smartphones to school for communication, information access, and entertainment. However, the presence of smartphones in schools has sparked serious debate among teachers, parents, and policymakers. Some believe that smartphones disturb learning, while others argue that they support modern education. Because technology continues to influence educational practices, the issue of smartphone use in schools becomes controversial and arguable, especially in Indonesian high schools. Therefore, smartphone use should be allowed for high school students in schools because it supports learning activities, improves communication and access to information, and develops students’ digital literacy and responsibility.

First of all, smartphone use should be allowed because it supports students’ learning and academic activities. Smartphones provide access to e-books, digital dictionaries, learning applications, and online educational platforms that help students understand lessons more effectively. According to constructivist learning theory, students learn better when they actively seek information and use various learning resources. In addition, smartphones enable students to quickly search for explanations when teachers use digital-based instruction. However, some people argue that smartphones distract students during lessons. They claim that students often use smartphones for social media or games instead of focusing on learning. Nevertheless, this argument is not entirely convincing, because schools can implement clear regulations and teachers can supervise smartphone use strictly for academic purposes only. Thus, smartphones can remain beneficial learning tools when used under proper control.

 Second, smartphones improve communication and access to information within the school environment. Smartphones allow students to communicate easily with teachers and classmates through learning management systems, messaging applications, or school platforms. Moreover, important announcements, assignments, and schedule changes can be delivered quickly and efficiently. From an educational management perspective, effective communication contributes to better learning outcomes. On the other hand, critics believe that smartphones encourage cheating and academic dishonesty. They argue that students may use smartphones to search for answers during exams or quizzes. However, this concern can be addressed, since schools can prohibit smartphone use during examinations and apply strict monitoring systems. As a result, smartphones still play a positive role in communication without harming academic integrity.

Third, allowing smartphones in schools helps students develop digital literacy and responsibility. In the modern era, digital skills are essential for higher education and future careers. By using smartphones responsibly at school, students learn self-control, ethical technology use, and information evaluation skills. Furthermore, guided smartphone use prepares students to face real-world technological challenges. Some opponents claim that smartphones reduce students’ face-to-face social interaction. They argue that students become more engaged with screens than with peers. Nevertheless, this assumption overlooks the educational function of smartphones, because smartphones can support collaborative learning, group discussions, and project-based activities. Therefore, smartphones do not necessarily weaken social skills when used wisely.

In conclusion, smartphone use should be permitted for high school students in schools. In other words, allowing smartphones supports learning activities, enhances communication and information access, and builds students’ digital literacy and responsibility. As discussed in the main body paragraphs, the negative impacts of smartphones can be minimized through clear regulations, supervision, and responsible use. If schools completely ban smartphones, students may lose valuable opportunities to develop essential digital skills for the future.
